Life Changes

Now, most of us, even those with modest endowments, still have to learn to manage ourselves. We will have to develop ourselves. We will have to place ourselves where we can make the greatest contribution. And we will have to stay mentally alert and engaged during a 50-year working life, which means knowing how and when to change the work we do.”

Peter Drucker
“Managing Oneself”
Harvard Business Review, 1999:65-66

This is a unique program exploring the human life cycle, it’s opportunities for building life structures, and for confronting and mastering life transitions.

This is a demanding, eye-opening program, which examines the life structures and the life cycle that we all share, and the unique experiences of each individual. This program can be tailored to a ½ day or one (1) full day, depending upon the demands of the conference and the needs of the participants.

This program begins with an exploration of the developmental ages and stages of the human life cycle. This developmental strategy should by all human beings and will help participants recognize where they are in the life cycle, where their spouse, their children, their peers, their bosses, even their organization is as each confronts developmental opportunities.

The life cycle has alternating stages of building structures and experiencing transition. This developmental strategy presented in this unique program, helps the individual recognize whether they are in a structure building period, or a life transition.

Individuals learn how to build life structures,

Building life structures requires choices. Knowing where one is in the developmental life cycle helps participants what choices to make, and how to make the right choices.

The most difficult part of traversing life’s frame-work is life transitions. This program spends one-third of its time identifying life’s transitional opportunities, encouraging participants to seize life’s opportunities, describing strategies to facilitate the life transitions, and recognizing when one’s transition is complete. We also incorporate strategies for managing the “stress” of life’s transitions.

This program is also experiential. It incorporates thought therapy where each individual has the opportunity to “draw their life,” in a “life map.” These life maps are explored with additional insight into one’s self, one’s family and career.

This program provides powerful “take-away’s” to each participant. First, there is a better understanding of what we all share across the human life cycle. They learn how to make choices and build life structures. They learn how to begin, traverse, and end life transitions. They develop in-depth self-knowledge. An additional take-away is incorporated in a workbook, received by each participant, which helps them develop a life strategy. This workbook encourages participants to consolidate and integrate their learning from the program into a coherent, understandable and recognizable life strategy.

This program has been provided for hundreds of TEC groups, and conferences and conventions around the world, and within the context of long-term consulting , as a developmental opportunity for individuals. Don’t miss this program!

You can purchase this program with a set of six (6) audiotapes and a workbook through The Center For Life Cycle Sciences. This tape series is entitled, “Life Changes: A Strategy for Life Management,” by Dr. Sheila Sheinberg.

Life Changes: A Strategy For Life Management

This series of six audiotapes by Dr. Sheila Sheinberg were recorded live in Houston, Texas for a seminar attended by dental professionals from all over the United States. Each of the tapes are designed to provide the listener with the opportunity to understand and prepare for the inevitable changes that will occur in the human life cycle.

Also included with the audiotapes is a workbook that will enable you to personally identify your present and future personality spheres of your life in six distinct areas: Spiritual; Family; Financial/Business/Professional; Physical; Social; and Self.

This composite picture of the six spheres will enable you to make the necessary adjustments to behavioral patters to balance your life for the future. The workbook permits you to continually manage life strategies by being aware of life deficiencies and making appropriate mid-course corrections.

Tape #1 – “Life Changes: Seize the Opportunity”

A framework for understanding personal change; “What do I want my life to stand for?” is a typical question asked. All of the questions raised in the past about the human life cycle have been directed to “being,” rather than “becoming.” By addressing and confronting life transitions, we have the ability to take advantage of the life changes that are a natural facet of our lives. Only then can we seize the opportunity that will propel us into the next stage of the human life cycle.

Tape #2 – “Life Changes: Challenges, Choices, Changes”

“Change is the name of the game.” It is not abnormal for a person to experience change. Only when we refuse to confront the issues and the challenges of change do we stagnate and then turn inward upon ourselves. Dr. Sheinberg discusses the implications of making choices for life management. To challenge one’s life structure is the only opportunity to move forward into the future.

Tape #3 – “Life Changes: Life Structures, Life Transitions”

“I believe we are changing all the time.” It is how we cope with change that is important. During a life time a person continually passes through periods of stability and chaos (transitions). In the transition period we shed some of the past to acquire the stability of the new life structure. “When you make a life transition what you are really doing is negotiating with yourself and how you connect to the world.”

Tape #4 – “Life Changes: A Survival Kit”

When you are in a transition phase of the life structure it is a feeling of being out of control. This tape addresses the “how to” of relieving stress when involved in the transition period. Dr. Sheinberg discusses her three recommendations for overcoming stress. You must make a decision and then go for it, and not get side tracked into continually being on the defensive.

Tape #5 – “Life Changes: Transition Strategies”

The strategies of taking control of one’s life, how to fight the feeling of guilt and the appraisal of the existing life structure. The transition period is one for exploration, trial and error, and the potential for changing oneself. “All of the change that really occurs does so in the transition period.” However this period is also the most vulnerable and dangerous.

Tape #6 – “Life Changes: The Ages and Stages of Life”

Dr. Sheinberg discusses the built in cycles involved in the human life cycle. “The first half of the life is to establish yourself in the world, the second half of life is to establish the world in your self.” In addition to this tape, an article “Life Cycles: Staying in the Game,” has been included with the album. This article about Dr. Sheinberg outlines not only the growth and development of the individual, but how that individual can best fit into the workplace.

“I have had opportunity of listening to many speakers over the years on various subjects in the area of behavioral science. [Dr. Sheinberg’s] enthusiasm, knowledge, attitude and openness were the finest that I have ever heard.”
Arthur G. Williams, Editor
Journal of Dental Practice Administration
